No Limit Texas Holdem Poker Semi Bluff

No Limit Texas Holdem Poker Semi Bluff
A much more effective weapon to have in your poker arsenal than just the 'stone cold hope your opponent folds' bluff, is the semi bluff. Everyone sees the bluffs made by pro players on ESPN where they had 2-5 off suit and took down a pot that had an Ace on the board, by bluffing and getting the other player to fold. However, the semi-bluff is more of a bluff that you make when you hit 'part' of your hand and you are pretty sure your opponent hit nothing. Let me show you what I mean.
You have A-7 suited in the Big Blind and are able to check to see a flop. The flop then comes K-7-6 rainbow. You picked up middle pair with top kicker. This is a hand that you can make a stab at with what I call a semi-bluff. If your opponent(s) does not hold a King, your bet makes it seem like you do have one, thus completing the mentality of the bluff. However, the semi-bluff can work to your advantage because you still have 'live' cards or the possibility of hitting your hand if you do get a call.A You get the best of both worlds. If another 7 hits on the turn or river you have made your hand. If an Ace hits, you have probably made your hand as well, so you can confidently bet this hand and not be terribly worried if you get a call.
By contrast, on what I call a 'naked' bluff, if you get a call or a raise from your opponent, you are probably going to have to shut it down unless you think you can bluff him on another street. If you have nothing and he calls your bluff, you are in trouble. If you are making a semi-bluff, then you do have some options and may want to continue in the hand.
The same goes for hands where you have a big draw. Let's say you are holding 6s-7s (suited) and the flop comes Ks-8s-9h. If you bet here is it a bluff? Sure, you have nothing but a 7-high in your hand. However, it is a semi-bluff because you have an up and down straight draw as well as the flush draw giving you 17 cards that could hit your hand. This is a great time to throw a bet at this pot because your odds of hitting a card that will make your hand are so high.
Especially in online poker where many times you are never sure what range of cards your opponents will be playing, I like to use the semi-bluff more than a naked bluff. Obviously, this can depend on the game you are playing, or the point you are at in a tournament, but overall, the naked bluff looks great on TV, but carries a lot of risk when it is used in online poker play.

Expanding Your Poker Vocabulary From NL Texas Hold Em

Expnding Your Poker Vocbulry From NL Texs Hold Em
I hve written severl posts in the pst bout getting wy from plying strictly No Limit Texs Holdem. More nd more, whether it is PokerStrs, Full Tilt,
BoDog, etc, you will find more csh gme vrints nd definitely more tournments in HORSE, RZZ, Stud, Stud h/l, Omh, nd Omh h/l. Becoming proficient in these gmes opens up some new doors to mking money nd incresing your poker bnkroll.
One of the resons tht I find it profitble to ply gmes such s HORSE, is mny times the other plyers plying them re bsiclly NL Hold em plyers. Most NL plyers hve  hrd time in Limit gmes nd you cn relly tke dvntge of this in situtions like HORSE or Omh where you re lmost lwys plying Fixed Limit or Pot Limit. Without tht "ll-in" ply, mny online poker plyers re t  loss for proper strtegy. You will see them continue to bet -K ll the wy to the River when it is obvious nother plyer hs  pir of something nd hs them bet, simply becuse they re used to plying in tht ggressive fshion, rther thn slowing down. They cnnot push you out of the pot by mking the big bets they re used to, therefore, they hve no strtegy fter the flop.
nother thing you will see, especilly in Omh, is plyer wy over-vluing their hnds. Hitting  pir of ces on the Flop just does not men  whole lot in  gme like Omh, but you will find mny plyers who think it is worth betting their whole chip stck on such n occurrence. Tke dvntge of these types nd bng them over the hed with you set, flush, or full house hnds.
Omh h/l is  gret gme becuse most plyers ply wy too mny hnds. You will get into trouble quickly in Omh h/l if you re n ction junkie who likes to be in every pot. Wtch for these guys, they re esy to trp. The sme plyers will lso get very excited bout -2. Mny times they will bet to the River nd end up losing huge pots hoping for  Low hnd tht never comes. You only wnt to ply hnds where you hve  chnce to win both pots, nd if you re risking  lot of chips for ONLY the low, you hve  gret strtegy to lose  lot of chips quickly!
Remember, strt plying these gmes t low levels until you lern the nunces of them. Ese into $5.50 tournments to gin some experience before you enter into the higher dollr tourneys or bigger csh gmes. There is money to be mde, just expnd your poker horizons.

Strategy for Omaha H/L Poker

Strategy for Omaha H/L Poker
One of the biggest mistakes that I notice other players make when they are playing Omaha h/l is that they get way too excited about being dealt pocket Aces. Sure, this is a great Hold'em hand, and it is sometimes even dominant in Omaha (although not as much as you would think) but it is a great way to get yourself into trouble in Omaha h/l.
Remember, many times in H/l, you are playing for 1/2 the pot if you only have a shot at a high hand. It is not a good idea to chip too many chips committed when you are not going to win the entire pot. In a FL game, you can play this hand a little stronger, in a PL game, you may get yourself in trouble. A pair of Aces is just not going to hold up that often in Omaha. You are very likely to be beat when another players 2 random cards pair up, someone makes a straight or a flush, or even a full house. And this is all taking into account that someone else is going to win the low. Do not commit large raises to a pot based solely on the fact that you have A-A in your hand.
Now if you are holding A-A-2-3 double suited that is an entirely different story, but most of the time when I see players go nuts it is with something like A-A-9-5 or A-A-T-7 and most of the time they are making a play for a pot where there hand will not hold up against good Omaha players. One exception could be if you are only up against one opponent, although he could still pair random cards for 2 pair to beat your Aces. If you are up against more than one opponent, dump those Aces unless your hand improves to a set or a full house on the Flop.
Patience and knowing a good starting hand are key in Omaha h/l. Don't fall into the trap most novice players make of over-committing to those Aces.
