5 Top Tips To Profit From Poker

If you are serious about profiting from poker, these 5 poker tips will give you the edge at the table.

1. Choose your site carefully - We're living in the age of online poker, with many different poker sites available to choose from. If you want to profit from poker in the long run, studying the attributes of different poker websites is essential. Some sites tend to attract 'loose' players, while other sites attract serious, seasoned players. The lower the standard of your opposition, the more you will profit.

2. Refine your playstyle - This doesn't mean you don't need to vary your tactics, it means that once you've found your most profitable play style, you need to really iron out all the flaws in it. If you usually raise with pocket 5s, and you realise that more often than not you are losing with them, it's time to make an adjustment to your play style.

3. Bankroll management - Possibly the most important part of poker (if you want to play for profits, not just for fun). If you set yourself a starting wager, you need to play on tables suitable for you. For example, if you have a bankroll of 20, you wouldn't want to play on a table with blinds more than 5p/10p. The general rule of thumb is: in a cash game you want to have around 200 big blinds when you sit down. In Sit and Go tournaments it is recommended that you don't wager more than 5% of your bankroll. Poker is a game of averages, so even if you play perfect poker, you may still lose in the short term. Profiting from poker is about the long game, making consistent profits over a period of time.

4. Tournament type - There are two types of poker that will earn the most money. Firstly, the most consistent way of profiting from poker, is the cash, or 'ring' game. You sit at the table with money you wager and bet using real money. If you have mastered the art of poker, this is the game type for you. The second type of game is Multi Table Tournaments (MTTs). This type of game yields the largest short term profits. MTTs can attract thousands of people for each tournament, and the rewards can be enormous. To be successful at MTTs you must use an aggressive playstyle, to gain chips early - if you want to have a chance of winning the biggest prizes.

5. Don't show emotion - Negative emotion (or tilt) is plentiful amongst amateur poker players. Seasoned, and professional poker players can take advantage of this, as players on tilt tend to play lesser valued hands. Tilt normally occurs after a bad beat, where a player with the better hand loses to a lesser hand. Poker is a game of probability. If you want to profit from poker successfully, you must realise that better hands will sometimes get beaten by worse hands, it's the long term profits that you should focus on.

Poker can be profitable, but you have to use all the tools available to gain the most out of the game.
